Obi Chukwu’s unique and diverse career makes him a highly devoted and successful advocate for immigrants and families. An immigrant himself, Obi Chukwu received his bachelor’s degree in Economics with distinction from the University of North Texas graduating as a Dean’s list honoree. After college he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Saint Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis where received his Juris Doctorate in 2004.
Obi observed the best lawyers in practice by working as a Law Clerk to the Honorable LaJune T. Lange (ret.) on several civil and criminal litigation cases and honed his legal writing skills. He developed his skills as a global advocate through his work with the International Leadership Institute (ILI), managing projects in Brazil and doing special assignments in Morocco and Tunisia. Obi’s international background and diversity of legal experiences range from human rights education to judicial institutional reform.
A member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) since 2008, Obi’s immigration law experience includes over 16 years of experience as a partner at the eponymous Nwokocha & Chukwu Law Offices before branching out on his own. Obi has represented businesses and individuals in employment and family-based immigration matters with special expertise in Special Immigrant Juvenile Petitions (SIJS), U Visas, VAWA Petitions, Asylum (Affirmative and Defensive), Removal Defense and all aspects of family-based petitions. Obi’s extensive immigration repertoire includes federal district court litigation, appeals before the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals, and representing clients in removal proceedings before the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) with reliefs ranging from Asylum to Cancellation of Deportation.
In addition to his immigration law practice, Obi’s legal experience extends to family law and his unique background has helped him build a successful family law practice that emphasizes respect for the family, protection for children, and fair and balanced treatment of individuals irrespective of their cultural background, immigration status, gender orientation or origin. Obi is a global citizen who, in addition to English, speaks Portuguese, Spanish, and Igbo. He is a long-time volunteer attorney with the Advocates for Human Rights. Obi is passionate about working with immigrants and families and considers it a great honor to be an attorney who helps hardworking people of all races, nationalities & religions to achieve their dreams.
